How to unlock the bootloader on an Android phone is the first step to rooting and flashing a custom ROM. Many people do not know this. In fact, unlocking the bootloader is very important.

1. Install Android SDK Manager and Phone Driver

Before unlocking the bootloader, you must install the Android SDK Manager on your PC. You can get this application on the official Android Developers page.

Go to the official Android Developers page and search for 'Command line tools only', then download according to PC type.



In addition to the Android SDK Manager application, you also need a USB Driver for HP which can be downloaded through your HP brand's official website.

After that, connect your cellphone and computer with a USB cable. Open the Android SDK Manager app and click on the 'Tools' folder. Hover over an empty area, then click 'Shift+Right-click' and select 'Open a Command Prompt Here'. Next, type:

adb devices


If it shows your mobile serial number, then the phone will be recognized and you can continue the process.

2. Enable USB Debugging and OEM Unlocking

The next way to check the unlock bootloader without a PC is to activate USB Debugging on your cellphone. The trick, open the 'Settings' on the cellphone.

Then, click 'About Phone' and select 'Build Number' seven times.


After that, return to the initial settings menu and the 'Developer Options' will appear. You need to enable 'OEM Unlocking' and 'USB Debugging'. Then, connect your phone with your computer again.

3. Get Unlock Key

Some HP brands may require this step. If so, you need to open the bootloader unlock page on your HP brand's official website. Next, follow the required steps:

After that, enter the prompt code that has been obtained. Right click on an empty page of the Android SDK Manager folder.

Then, select 'Open a Command Prompt Here' and type the prompt code, (for example on Motorola: get_unlock_data and on HTC: get_identifier_token).

The Command Prompt will issue a token in the form of a very long character string. Copy the text and copy it to your HP manufacturer's website in the box provided.



4. Unlock Bootloader

Open the fastboot menu on your cellphone by pressing 'Power + Volume Down' for 10 seconds.

Don't forget to connect your phone with a computer that has Android SDK Manager installed.

Click an empty area in the Android SDK Manager and click 'Shift + Right Click'. Then, select 'Open a Command Prompt Here'. Type the command:

fastboot oem unlock


The command above is the most common example, you can find out what to type through the HP manufacturer's official website.

After entering the command, the phone will ask you whether you are sure you want to unlock the bootloader or not. Use volume keys to confirm.

If the process is complete, reboot your phone and you will get a notification if the bootloader is unlocked.
